INTRODUCTION

Hello! My name is Olivia, and I am a fourth-year student in the Cellular, Molecular, & Microbial Biology program. I have been involved in research since the WI22 semester when I took Intro to Research (BIOL3980). That summer, I completed a UREAP under the leadership and direction of Dr. Mark Rakobowchuk, who sparked my curiosity in Human Physiology research. Since completing my UREAP, I have undertaken two additional applied Directed Studies with Dr. Rakobowchuk, as well as a library-based Directed study with Dr. Don Nelson.

In the Human Physiology lab, my UREAP research involved developing a methodology for the accurate measurement of peripheral blood pressure as an indirect measurement of arterial blood pressure. On the other hand, my applied Directed Studies focused on analyzing baroreflex sensitivity, using traditional and novel methods, under the condition of increased dietary salt intake. Additionally, my library-based Directed Study with Dr. Nelson and a small group of peers examined biomolecular condensates. My project, specifically, investigated the potential role of condensates in neurodegenerative diseases, focusing on Alzheimer’s.

Throughout my time researching at TRU, I have been afforded the opportunity to complete multiple research projects, which have been both challenging and exciting. I have learned that research requires discipline, as well as a willingness to make mistakes and learn from them. I cannot wait to see the path my future research leads me down, as I recognize that research is a door to many opportunities and experiences. This process has been incredible thus far, and I have nothing but gratitude for my incredible supervisors and peers who have supported me through it. Below is a selection of work that demonstrates my research endeavours and knowledge.
